Join me for a spring workshop exploring the lives of animals through poetry while penning responses to the dark gardens & what lies beyond. From speculative to gothic to animals on the edge of extinction, we’ll look at works that conjure the intersections of our bodies and the inhabitants of the non-human world. We will write from places of tension and connection and invite these contractions to become alive on the page. Prompts will be given to bring us deeper into the act of observation and the minutia of animal life, including your own, as a way to expand your voice and craft within a world worth loving.
Each workshop will include generative prompts, natural history on the lives of animals, and one assigned poem per week to guide your writing. We’ll take cues from some of the masters of the craft, including the late essayist Barry Lopez, musician and writer Tanya Tagaq, and the poets Emily Skaja, Donika Kelly, Carly Joy Miller and others. Participants will have a chance to receive group feedback on their writing, focus on revision, and create a small portfolio of work that spans different forms and perspectives.
March 28th to May 2nd, ONLINE
6 weeks, Tuesdays from 6-8:30pm on Zoom
6 participants total, $275 per participant

Testimonials...
"Poetry of the Dark Dark with Kelly Gray was the creative reset I craved. Her style of teaching builds a sense of ease, safety, and community. I found myself exploring new ways of approaching my writing craft and gained newfound confidence in my ability to play with form to heighten the content of my poems. Additionally, I enjoyed the variety of readings and the flexibility of our discussions. Enthusiastically and endlessly recommend her classes."

"My writing was ready for a new angle, an inspiration. I took Kelly's workshop because 1. it's her, and she is beloved in our community, and 2. because I wanted to stretch my words, formats, and language. The space Kelly held was a safe one, ripe for investigation. The processes she taught, and the workshopping that we did with each others' work allowed for the best work to arise on its own. And it's that recipe/non-recipe that pivoted our writing, and expression, into new landscapes."

"Her perspective as an engaged instructor really stands out. She is organized and thoughtful in her planning with students. I specifically appreciated the open format of community building with everyone in a group, blended with break out groups for workshopping. I gained confidence in receiving critical feedback from sharing connections with other writers, facilitated by Kelly."

"Exploring the writing workshop Changing Bodies, Changing Landscapes with Kelly Gray was a journey, challenge, joy and deeply connecting. Kelly led us through rigorous readings, exposed us to diverse voices, encouraged, challenged and championed us. In the brief time we spent together, through Kelly's deft and skillful teaching, we learned about ourselves, each other and were encouraged to voice our individual experiences through our poetry and real time editing. We learned fresh skills, created new works and all fell a little in love with each other."
